The word “music” means many things to many people and can serve a variety of purposes. For example, we can be entertained by music in a concert hall, be moved by the background musical score in the movie or we can be motivated to move our bodies in exercise to the right music.
The possibilities of music are endless.
However, one of the most powerful uses for music is therapeutic. Music has been the catalyst for providing valuable and innovative cognitive therapies. Music therapy itself has benefits for people with brain injuries for a broad range of needs including physical, cognitive and socio-emotional and communication skills.
Since 2014, the Brain Energy Support Team (BEST) has partnered with Puget Sound Music Therapy to explore these very benefits, resources and tools.
To kick off 2015, BEST and Puget Sound Music Therapy are pleased to announce a new and unique experience coming to Our BEST Space in University Place, Washington on February 4, 2015 at from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. “Musical Journey,” is a new music-based, interactive and hand’s on group that offers support while encouraging individual creativity and exploring personal journeys through the medium of music and music-related activities.
This group experience will be held bi-monthly at the Space (the first and third Wednesdays of the month). There is no charge to attend and pre-registration is not required.
Led by board certified music therapist, Megumi Azekawa, participants will create music, move to the rhythm and the music and participate in cognitive skills exercises through music.
For participants, this could mean signing, playing instruments, active music listening or writing songs as a group.
The most important thing to remember is that no musical experience is required in order to participate. All are welcome and encouraged to give it a try.
